Peter Haig

The University of Queensland

Peter Haig graduated from Griffith University in Brisbane in 1986 with BSc majoring in Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Biological Chemistry as well as a B Ed from the University of Queensland the following year.

He worked for Shell Australia and Shell Chemicals International for 25 years as a Chemist, Lubricants Engineer and finally Global Mining Manager specialising in Solvent Extraction (15 years).

Peter worked for BASF from 2013 to 2023 and was responsible for BASF’s Mining Solutions Solvent Extraction business in the Asia-Pacific region, specifically in business development, process control, safety auditing and troubleshooting of customer’s SX plant issues.

Since retiring from BASF, Peter has worked as a Solvent Extraction Consultant.

Honours and Awards

  • AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre, Invited Panel Member, 2001

  • Shell Olympian, 2002 – Awarded for Exceptional Service to Customers.

  • 2006 – Awarded the prestigious Shell Executive Vice President’s (EVP) Award in the Deliver Growth category for the nomination: “Capturing growth for Solvents in the mining sector”.

  • Invited to present at the 2008 and 2012 BASF (Cognis) user meetings in South Africa and the USA respectively.

  • Solvent Extraction Session Chair at the 2008 & 2011 ISEC (International Solvent Extraction Committee) Conferences

  • Contributing author (chapter on SX Safety) to the definitive book on Solvent Extraction - "Solvent Extraction" by Dr. Gordon M. Ritcey - one of the most important and extensive text books covering all aspects of solvent extraction. The 2 books contain the basic and applied aspects of solvent extraction that assists chemists, metallurgists, and engineers in the development of metallurgical separation processes.

  • 2014 Indonesian Process Metallurgy Award from the Institute Teknologi Bandung

  • BASF 2015 Extra Mile Award for the category of Entrepreneurial Drive.

  • BASF 2017 Certificate of Merit – BASF Asia Pacific Awards

  • Elected onto the ISEC (International Solvent Extraction Committee) at the 2017 Meeting.
